How did the N2CID Digital network get started?

The N2CID Digital network was born from already having an IT and Ham Radio background for over 25 years and wanting to provide a resource to local HAMS that was already being used and available since 2009 (Local DMR Repeaters). This was achieved by converting multiple existing DMR digital repeaters throughout the Buffalo area that were being used commercially and for community projects such as (KidTraxx) for over 10 years to ham use. Once a DMR movement in Ham Radio was noticed it was decided to convert the repeaters and provide them to the HAM community.

Later additional repeaters were added as well as local REF, XRF and DCS Reflectors. Now as we move from 2019 to 2020 we have grown in coverage and height to 1,846.15′ ASL, the largest in the area which provides coverage to almost 100sq miles. During 2018 and 2019 over $30k was invested into gear and network infrastructure to build a solid redundant routing platform for the digital protocols we provide resulting in 99.999% service uptime for all DMR services including Voice, Data, Telemetry, GPS, GloNASS and BackHaul services. Upgrades to our hosting environment which we use to develop and host commercial services such as Web-Apps, Web-Sites and E-mail as well as providing internet services to local ham clubs such as BARRA were also included and completed.

So in short, It was all started for the love of Ham Radio and Technology 😉


Do you offer internet access to Ham’s over DMR or D-STAR?

While in the past this has been done and tested, currently we do not due to legal reasons. Unless you have a commercial internet service with reseller permission it is illegal to connect any internet directly to DMR for re-use to the public. And yes the Carrier and the Feds will show up at your door lol. TRUST ME! 😉

Why do you route your DMR and DSTAR traffic over IPv6 versus IPv4?

While IPv6 has been around for about 10 years, the world is just now starting to adopt its use more and more due to the shortage of IPv4 addresses available. IPv6 being so new has nearly no congestion on networks and very minimal latency as compared to IPv4. Digital Radio technologies such as DMR require less than 700ms of latency which can be an issue on some larger networks however if you route that traffic over IPv6 instead it is a lot cleaner due to the way it routes and moves traffic via RA. On a small DMR network this isn’t such a big deal however when you want to route DMR over larger segments you want the traffic as clean as possible. There are also a lot more fancy features in IPv6 and RA that you can use in DMR/Digital networks such as these like better compression, roaming IP, and others.

What type of network redundancies are in place for DMR connectivity to the world?

While are cannot fix every issue out of our control we can do our best to keep connectivity flowing for the users. Our current network redundancies in place include full BGP Mesh Routing and Peering for shortest route path as well as all N2CID repeaters being load balanced against our internal master servers which are also load balanced against all (4) of the BrandMeiser US Master Servers. If any of the BM master servers go down or become unavailable for any reason our systems will automatically connect to the next available master server with the least latency and continue to route traffic over our Clusters and Talk Groups it as if nothing ever happened. Some people have HOT Mic’s (Really LOUD) or are really low and hard to hear on DMR. What can I do on my end to fix that?

Unfortunately there are so many brands of DMR radios out there its hard to have an actual standard. I personally use the 25% rule which is; your mic gain should be set so that most people can hear you perfectly with their volume knob set to 25% audio. This leaves room to lower the volume if needed but also allows a 75% increase of audio if you are somewhere really noisy say in a vehicle or crowd. This 25% rule seems to work quite well among the users on the system. Don’t be afraid to adjust your audio gain and get on the system and ask how it sounds. What is linking or Clustering and how does it effect my Hot-Spot or Repeater?

Linking or Clustering is the ability to link a static Talk Group among many Hot-Spots and Repeaters in the area which help to extend the communication coverage of that Talk Group or (TG) for local Hams. Once you are linked in and you use your Dual-Radio Hot-Spot from anywhere in the world on TG:310441 you will still be connected to all the local repeaters in the area as if you never left. As an example lets say you travel to Florida for vacation and you have your Hot-Spot connected via your Hotel or Cellular Phone. Now you key up on TG:310441 and magically through the internet you are talking over the repeaters in Buffalo back to your friends and family locally!. The main N2CID Repeaters also support TMS Texting, Telemetry, GPS, GNSS Tracking (including Altitude, Lat, Long, Speed and Direction), APRS/DPRS Tracking and Messaging as a standard. Linking actual repeaters together helps with building the TG coverage map as well.

Why did you choose a BrandMeister only approach to Repeater linking?

To start I took a poll on our site over a period of three months and explained this ability and options and asked current users to vote on whether they would like these data features which are only available with using BrandMeister or would they prefer Voice only service on other networks. The vote was 28 to 1 for BM at the end of the poll and enabling the ability for them to use these extended features they were interested in so we took that approach.

Brandmeister is the only ham friendly group that allows full extended data routing across their network and endpoints versus just Voice. This gives us the ability to utilize linked routing of DMR data between repeater sites to include DMR IPv4/IPv6 encapsulated packet routing as well as TMS Texting, Telemetry, GPS, GNSS Tracking and messaging via APRS as mentioned above. Without this ability we would have none of those extra features for you as well as more in the future. We would be restricted to a Voice only service. We also back haul any traffic we cannot send over DMR directly between sites via an IPv6 mesh management tunnel.

As of 1/1/19 you can now reach the N2CID Network on TG 310441 from any Repeater or Hotspot around the world.
